NBA Handicapping, Part I:

I’m going to dabble a bit here, and hopefully answer all the questions about NBA capping I’ve been getting past 24 hours:

What do we all know about the NBA?

1.) A line move away from the spread you are interested in is a bad, bad sign.

2.) The NBA season is 66 total games in a short period of time.

3.) Every NBA team. no matter who they are, has 7 or 8 “Stinkers” a year

What do we think we know about the NBA, but seem to forget?

1.) This is not college basketball. Home Court advantage is not as important as it is at the college level, unless the Portland Trailblazers or OKC Thunder are home. If you ever find yourself saying “Yeah, but _____ is home.” You are in trouble. With the condensed schedule, it’s going to be as difficult for the Season Ticket Holders to get to a playoff-level intensity as it is the players.

2.) The Los Angeles Lakers are good

3.) The San Antonio Spurs are good

4.) Who is officiating a game is almost as important as the two teams that are competing. Some refs are notorious “down the stretch foul callers”, some put whistles in their pocket. This is CRUCIAL for Totals. This also affects the rate of “Superstar” whistles blown down the stretch. Do your homework!

What should I know about the NBA that I don’t already know?

1.) The Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, and New Orleans Hornets ATS are by far the best bang for your buck … every single night. Why? Public perception is everything.

- Nobody is ready to admit that the TWolves are decent (despite their 0-2 start).

- Nobody is ready to admit that Portland can very easily represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals.

- Nobody is ready to admit that the CP3 trade was actually a blessing for the New Orleans Hornets, and they are legitimate NBA squad with a crunch-time scorer (vital for NBA winning record.)

Until further notice, continue to cash in on these three teams.

2.) The New Jersey Nets have zero betting value, even when they are getting 12+ points.

3.) The Indiana Pacers will finish 4th or better in the Eastern Conference.

4.) Teams are OK this year with taking games off. This 2011-2012 NBA Season will be managed like Major League Baseball. Players need rest, like pitchers/everyday position players … and as we progress throughout the year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some winning teams bench their entire starting squad and give the youngsters a look. If you are on top of this before the line reacts, you are going to make A LOT of $.

5.) The “Law of David Stern” is a phenomenal betting strategy. Think of it this way: if David Stern would endorse your bet, you are in good company. He still controls the league like Vince McMahon does the WWE; and if you think he will EVER allow his precious Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, etc… to lose an important game, you are out of your mind. They just always seem to get the calls down the stretch, don’t they? Stone Cold always seemed to win the big pay-per-view main event, didn’t he?

Until next time … #ITSATRAP .
